VPS and ExxonMobil donate more than $30,000 to local schools for math and science
VPS Convenience Store Group and the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program have partnered together to award $30,500 in grant funding to 61 schools throughout the southeast service area to support math and science education. This year’s grant total ranks VPS as the 13th largest grantor of these educational funds in the nation for 2012-2013.
VPS Convenience Store Group, headquartered in Wilmington, NC, operates 421 stores in eight states under six brand names including Scotchman, Village Pantry, Li’l Cricket, Young’s Food Stores, Everyday Shops and Next Door Stores. Since 2001, VPS has provided more than $155,000 in grant money to local schools throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
“It is an honor for us to be able to provide our local schools with this type of financial support, particularly during times of budget cuts and limited outside funding for the educational system,” said Jeff Turpin, CEO of VPS Convenience Store Group. “We are proud to work with ExxonMobil Educational Alliance to make learning fun for the young people in the communities we serve in the fields of math and science.”
These grants are designed to help schools purchase supplemental learning tools such as science lab supplies, iPads, graphing calculators or to fund math and science related field trips. The $500 grant for each chosen school is funded by the ExxonMobil Corporation. The ExxonMobil Educational Alliance is designed to provide fuel retailers such as VPS with an opportunity to invest in the future of their communities through grants to neighborhood schools.
